New to golf? Here's a helpful glossary of basic terms

Golf terminology refers to the words and phrases used to describe the various aspects of the game of golf. Here are a few common terms:

  • Birdie: a score of one stroke under par on a hole

  • Bogey: a score of one stroke over par on a hole

  • Eagle: a score of two strokes under par on a hole

  • Hole-in-one: a score of one stroke on a par 3 hole

  • Par: the number of strokes a skilled golfer should take to complete a hole

  • Tee: the starting point for a hole

  • Fairway: the area of the course between the tee and the green, typically covered in grass

  • Green: the area on the course where the hole is located, typically a small, smooth, and well-manicured area of grass

  • Putt: a shot played on the green with a putter, used to roll the ball into the hole

There are many other terms used in golf, but these are some of the most basic and commonly used.
